Disconnected? How to Fix PoE 2 Logging In and Instance Failures -
CoastalWriter - 23.06.2026
There is nothing quite as frustrating as gearing up for a solid session of Path of Exile 2, hitting that log-in button, and being greeted by an immediate crash or the notorious "Failed to connect to instance" error. Instead of battling the monsters of Wraeclast, you end up battling the loading screen. If your character feels hopelessly trapped in a disconnect loop, you are definitely not alone. These issues usually happen when the server tries to force your character into a corrupted, dead, or severely overloaded instance.
The good news is that you don't have to wait around for a hotfix. Players have figured out a few highly effective workarounds to bypass these clogged server nodes and get back into the action. Here is a straightforward, step-by-step troubleshooting guide from a player's perspective to help you fix your connection and get your game running smoothly.
1. Force a New Instance or Town
Login
When your game crashes while loading a character or switching areas, it is almost always because the server is routing you into a bad instance. You can manually override this using a simple keyboard trick.
- At the Character Selection Screen: Instead of just clicking your character and hitting play, hold down the Ctrl key and then click Play. A prompt will pop up asking if you want to log into your most recent town or hideout instead of your last saved location. Click OK. This forces the game to find a clean landing spot for you.
- At Waypoints or Zone Gates: If you are already in the game but keep crashing when trying to enter a specific map or zone, go to the area entrance or waypoint. Hold down Ctrl and Left-Click on it. A menu will appear showing active instances. Click "New" to generate a completely fresh map layout. Keep in mind that this resets the specific map layout, but it effectively clears out whatever was causing the loading failure.
2. Switch Servers and Gateways
Sometimes, local server nodes experience regional routing issues or sudden spikes in traffic that cause them to drop packets. Swapping your gateway can break the loop.
Log out completely to the main menu and look for the gateway drop-down menu. Try selecting a different region entirely. For example, if you usually play on US East, try switching to US Texas. If you are in Europe and experiencing issues on your closest node, give Stockholm or London a shot. For the best results, combine this with the Ctrl + Play method mentioned above to ensure your new server loads a completely clean town instance.
3. Change Your Display Mode
It sounds completely unrelated to network issues, but a strange bug tied to full-screen display configurations has been known to trigger immediate "Failed to join any instances" disconnects right at login. Changing how the game handles your monitor can strangely resolve it.
Before you try logging in, open up the Options menu from the main screen. Head over to the Graphics settings and look at your Display Mode. If you are running on Fullscreen, switch it to Windowed Fullscreen (or vice versa if you are already on windowed). Apply and keep the changes, then try logging in again. This quick toggle has fixed the loop for a surprising number of players online.
4. Route Around ISP Blockages with a VPN
If you are experiencing persistent instance failures across multiple characters and servers, the culprit might actually be your Internet Service Provider. Certain ISPs have aggressive node filtering or bad routing paths to the Path of Exile 2 servers, which causes game packets to get dropped entirely.
An easy fix for this is to fire up a VPN or a specialized gaming network tool before you launch the game. Connect to a nearby server node through the VPN and then log in. The beauty of this workaround is that once you successfully bypass the broken routing path and load your character safely into town, you can usually turn the VPN off and continue playing normally on your standard connection.
5. Check Your Firewall and Verify Game Files
If absolutely nothing else works, it is time to check your local setup to make sure a recent game patch or security update isn't blocking your connection.
- Add a Firewall Exception: Go to your Windows Security settings, open up Firewall & network protection, and select "Allow an app through firewall". Browse your files and make sure the Path of Exile 2 executable (.exe) is added to your outbound exceptions list so your security software doesn't block game data.
- Verify Game Files: Corrupted update files can cause random zone crashes. If you are playing through Steam, right-click Path of Exile 2 in your library, select Properties, go to Installed Files, and click Verify integrity of game files. Steam will scan for any broken data and repair it automatically.
By utilizing these workarounds—especially the Ctrl-click instance override—you should be able to break free from the disconnect cycle and get back to exploring the depths of Path of Exile 2.
